The United States of America (USA), commonly referred to as the United States (US), America, or simply the States, is a federal republic consisting of 50 states, 16 territories, a federal district, and various overseas extraterritorial jurisdictions. The 48 contiguous states and the federal district of Washington, D.C., are in central North America between Canada and Mexico. The state of Alaska is the northwestern part of North America and the state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific.

The USA began as several small colonies of the British Empire, that merged together in rebellion, and later formed a nation that quickly expanded west-ward. After a series of successful wars against Mexico, and several unsuccessful ones against Canada, the American nation established itself in the middle third of North America.

During the mid-18th century the United States experienced its worst war before or since. The southern portion of the nation went into open rebellion over the issue of slavery, and after several years of war, the country was finally reunited, and quickly became industrialized came to dominate world affairs.

In the 20th century, the US fought several large wars and many smaller regional ones, including the Pacific War of World War II against Japan.  Later during the late 20th, and early 21st centuries the United States led the hastening pace of technological inovation.  Inventions such as the internet, and later the OASIS ushered a new era of prosperity.

Ready Player One

Several factors led to a gradual decline in the standard of living that was once the highest in the world, first was the 30 year great depression that left a large portion of the population unemployed.  Second was the ecological that had slowly growing as the world entered the industrial age.  The pace of extinction grew at an alarming pace, the weather became unpredictable and stronger than before. Thirdly, peak oil had arrived, without a true switch to another form of engery to propell the economy.  Due to the first three factors, massive migrations occurred, with large numbers of people moving from the hinterlands to the heartland regions that could cope with the looming distaster.

The final factor was the OASIS itself, the best and brightest minds that could solve the issues facing the United States were immersed in a massive video game.
